Common dental emergencies we treat
Severe toothache: Acute pain can signal infection, abscess, a cracked tooth, or nerve involvement. We will identify the cause and treat or stabilise it promptly.
Knocked-out tooth: Time is critical. Keep the tooth moist (in milk or saliva), avoid touching the root, and get to us as quickly as possible. Reimplantation is sometimes possible if treatment begins within the hour.
Cracked or fractured tooth: Cracks range from superficial to severe. We assess the extent, relieve any discomfort, and recommend the appropriate restoration.
Lost or broken crown or filling: An exposed tooth can become rapidly sensitive or infected. A temporary or permanent replacement is placed to protect it.
Dental abscess or swelling: Facial swelling, pus, or a persistent bad taste can indicate a serious infection requiring antibiotics and prompt dental intervention.
Soft tissue injuries: Cuts or trauma to the lips, cheeks, tongue, or gums from accidents are assessed and treated appropriately.
What to do before you arrive
Call us as soon as you can so we can advise you on immediate steps and prepare for your arrival. For significant pain, over-the-counter ibuprofen or paracetamol (taken as directed) can help manage discomfort in the interim. Do not place aspirin directly on gum tissue — this can cause a chemical burn. For a knocked-out tooth, do not scrub the root or store it in water.
After the emergency is under control, your dentist will discuss what follow-up care is needed to fully restore the tooth and prevent a recurrence.
